Research.
This article focus' on one advert in particular talking about the different genres the advert uses to appeal to a large audience. As cleaning products are stereotypically aimed at women this article discusses the use of an uncle and nephew it also draws on particularly masculine roles illustrating it is not just targeted at women.
This book talks about the influence advertising has had over the years and how it particularly bloomed in the 1950's. It shows how the adverts can persuade consumers very heavily and how it is a very powerful tool.
I have referenced and dated these articles/ books, I have also highlighted and annotated relevant information.
Research.
The book also refers to one of the most revolutionary elements of music videos, MTV and talks to us about the developments it has made over the years.
This book looks at the relation within brand familiarity it tells use that greater known brands gain more viewer attention.
These two pages very useful in describing different elements best used to create music videos linking all the terminology to the professional industry. I have referenced and dated all of these pieces of research.
Synopsis for academy advert idea 3.
Advert idea 3: My final idea it for the first thing to be shown is the Academy name and slogan. 1st a student will give an introduction about the academy. We will then cut to two other students who will show us around a few of the spaces whilst talking about the academy. The advert will finish with an example of some of the practical work the students have created. This advert will be in a documentary style and as we will be using academy dance students as well as being informative it will be from the perspective of a student. The advert will be targeted at students aged between 14-16. it will contain information about the academy, footage of work spaces, work produced and it will tell the potential students what the current students enjoy about the academy.
Synopsis of academy advert idea 2.
Advert idea 2: This advert will open with different images/ footage of the dance spaces the school has to offer, we would then cut to a clip of the students sitting down planning a dance routine to show the audience we value written work as important as we value practical. I would then show students discussing the Academy with other potential students. Finally the last shot would be of the students performing a dance then before fading out then slogan and contact details would be shown. The message with this idea is to encourage potential students to join our academy, it is also to show the key elements the school values like i listed earlier. The target audience is also students aged between 14-16, who are very interested with dance and would like focus on the subject. I think the style for this is quite surreal.

Measuring the audience.
There are a variety of ways you can measure an audience:
Focus groups:
This is a small selected group of people used to give feedback on a specific product.
pros- you can expand on questions to gain a greater understanding of the audiences views on the specific topic.
cons- focus groups are small and won't consist of a large number of people therefore there won't be a large variety of feedback.
Questionnaire:
These are given to a variety of people to gain a wide range of product feedback.
pros- These can be handed out to a large number of people therefore you can receive a variety of feedback from a questionnaire.
cons- questionnaires are very set questions and can not be adapted to find out more information.
BARB (Broadcasters' Audience Research Board):
BARB is a organization used to collect data on different media forms.
pros- a positive of using research from BARB because its legitimate produced information.
Television research agencies:
These are companies which look into audience type and the relation of audience type to different channels/ programs.
pros- this is good to discover the type of audience your product would appeal to.
Ratings:
These are lists of the amount of viewers for different channels and programs.
pros- This is useful to give information on the relation of ratings to different channels.
The target audience for the academy is mixed genders between the ages of 14 and 16 with a keen interest in dance. I feel the best way to measure this kind of audience would be a mixture of both a focus group and a questionnaire. The questionnaire would give me quantitive research therefore I could collate the feedback to see any general relations between the target audience and the product. The focus group would also be useful as unlike the questionnaire once I receive a answer I can then expand my question to gain a higher standard of detail within my research.

WWW:
- I think i included a good range of shots
- good fading at the end with the music and voice over
- the music fits well with the advert
EBI:
- could be a faster cutting
- a variety of more close ups
- variety of location, film in a different studio

Idea 2 & 3 summery.
Our second idea was a 'pacman' theme ident, which is a sequence of the pacman ice cubs chasing various other smaller ice cubes. At one point the chase changes and the pacman is being chased, the words 'The Grid' then appear in ice cube lettering. I liked this idea although pacman is copy right it would have been difficult for us to create this advert.
The third ident is showing a frying pan being placed on a hob, then a freezer door being opened and ice cube lettering being taken out. The words 'The Grid' our then popped out of the ice cube mold and placed into the pan and we see them melt away. This is also a good idea but i felt it was a little basic and we could create a more interesting ident.
Decisions, revisions and results.
Filming rushes & uploading work:
I first collected a camera, tripod and memory stick. I then went to my location and filmed the necessary shots for this location, my problems occurred. I then uploaded my work to work to the mac via Imovie i saved it to my documents then imported the files to final cut express, I was then able to start editing my work.
Creating Rushes Log, Edit Decision List and Completing a Rough Edit:
I created a rushes log and edit decision list which then enabled me to be aware of what clips I needed and when. I followed this and was able to create and well structured advert. I didn't use music in my rough edit, once I was satisfied with the rough outline of my video exported it using quick time conversion.
Feedback from client & final edit:
Once I had exported my rough edit i uploaded it to youtube so my client was able to watch the rough version. My client replied to my rough edit with a video talking about what they liked and what I could improve, so I began to work on improving the points my client had mentioned, I found music for the advert at www.freeplaymusic.com on this website i found and upbeat song which I thinks suits the advert well.
Exporting:
I then used quick time conversion to export my work, which I uploaded to youtube. Once I had uploaded it to youtube I got the embed code and posted it on my blog.
Creating on screen graphics.
I used live type to create the on screen graphics for this ident, this gave me a choice of fonts. I found a font called 'chilly' which looks like the words are melting. I chose this because it links to our ice cube idea. Once I had chosen the font I i altered the colour to blue to represent ice lettering. I then altered the spacing between the letters making them slightly further apart. I added the text to my final cut project, I made the words bounce into the screen and then slide of the screen like ice cubes melting.
Peer feedback.
Once I had created my final advertisement I showed it to my peers and received some feedback, this is what I learnt from the feed back:
"I like the idea of the fast cutting to the beat of the music although it isn't perfectly in time it would look good if it was, I also like the use of scenery within the advert."
"I like the variety of shots of the different dancers and routines, there is a good variety of angles but I feel the advert is lacking in close up shots."
"The clips showing the equipment and studio portrayed the school and its resources very well, to improve maybe you could add in a variety of dances in different spaces."
From this I was able to break it down into WWW and EBI.
WWW: The scenery and shots of studio/ equipment at school, the fast cutting and the variety of shots.
EBI: If the cutting to the beat was perfectly in time, show some different dance spaces, use more close up shots.
Rough edit.
This my first rough edit of my academy advert.

Evidence of me using planning documents.
This picture shows me using my paper edit to edit my my video how I had originally planned.
This is another picture showing me using my paper edit sheet when creating my music video.
This picture shows me referring to my rushes log during the process of creating my video.
This picture shows me using my story board to direct my actors before filming my work.
This picture also shows me using my story board when filming my music video.
Stages of construction.
Filming:
I used my story board to help me film all the correct shots I needed, before filming these shots I used my location visit sheet to check I had all the correct places to angle and place the camera. I also used my risk assessment sheet when I arrived to film to check I had considered all the risks that we would encounter.
Rushes log:
I uploaded my footage to final cut and logged all of my rushes, I did this so i was aware of the clips I would and wouldn't use. This then helped me to edit my work much quicker and I was able to create a rough edit, based upon the paper edit I created and the rushes I logged.
Effects & Final edit:
After showing my rough edit to my client I then went back and looked through my rushes log for more interesting clips that could be added. I found a selection of more suitable clips and added them in, I used a selection of effects from final cut to make the video more interesting,I also used my story board to help me create my on screen graphics. I then exported my work using quick time conversion.

Props, costume, make- up for academy advert.
Props- The props required will be included within the set, for props i need the speakers used in the studios and the lighting.
Costume- There isn't a specific costume, I just need to dancers to be wearing the clothing representing the academy (uniform).
Make-up- Make-up isn't needed as as we want to show the academy as about dance not about how you look whilst performing.

For my original idea for unit 29 i was unable to complete documentation of props/ costume/ make- up and casting decisions. Several groups were joined together and we decided to do a different idea altogether in which we were allocated different jobs one of the jobs i was given was to plan and supply all the correct props, costume and make up for filming our music video. I also helped encourage one of our groups members to take on the role of our artist in our music video.

Synopsis of Academy advert idea 1.
Advert idea 1: The advert will include an opening shot of a class doing a high energy dance routine to draw in the audiences attention. It will then go on on to show the students in a lesson giving a brief view of the fun and inviting atmosphere the lessons have. The end of the advert will be a montage of clips of students rehearsing dance routines and also performing dance routines, when this fades out the words 'Glenthorne High School Dance Academy' with the slogan 'Our Studio Is Your Oyster' underneath this will be some contact details. The message of the advert is to show potential students what we offer at the academy to try and draw them in, also to promote different elements we value to keep the school working well together, these values include: team work, hard work, commitment, respect, communicating well with one another. It is targeted at teenagers aged between 14 and 16. The style of advert will be a mix between montage and documentary, so it will be visual but also informative.

Evaluation and Summery.
I feel i collected a reasonable amount of reliable information about the knowledge of academies due to the questionnaires i created. When collating the evidence i discovered that every teenager taking part uses some kind of social network the two that came up the most were 'Facebook' and 'Twitter' although we are not aiming to use the internet as a form of advertisement. I was also able to draw that teenagers watch a fair amount of T.v mostly in the late evening time so this helps me to form a rough idea around what time we could air adverts and what sort of channels would be best to show them on. I also researched a couple of different dance academies RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) and Dream Dance Academy. i used their websites to find out information about the two academies and in what way they compared to the academy i am advertising for, i looked at techniques they used to describe the academy and entice new and potential students. I believe the resource i used to discover this information very reliable as it is the direct website of the academies
In summery i feel that the RAD can be competition due to its well known reputation, Dream Dance will be competition because of the two other classes of singing and drama it offers which go hand in hand with dance. Looking at the techniques they use i am sure we can create something of that nature as it seems to attract students. By using the information i discovered from my questionnaire and applying it to similar techniques that the other academies used i feel we can create a very successful and appealing advertisement.

The new Buzz.
If this was to be used as a picture on the home page of a website I would save it as a PNG file, because it is small enough to be able to load quickly on a website page.
The new Mixx.
If this logo was to be used for merchandise I would save it as JPEG as it is the most versatile format, therefore easy to use for different types of merchandise.
The new Lock.
To use this logo for billboard advertisement I would save it as a vector file because vector files don't use pixels therefore the picture can't blur as the size increases.
The creation of the new Lock logo.
I altered the style of the lock logo also to give more of a representation of the station. I started of by finding a more suitable font using www.dafont.com i chose the font:Megadeath as i felt it was most appropriate.
I started of using the gradient tool to create a background i felt best suited the station, i used a combination of white and grey to create a circular effect.
I then opened the image of a lock and inserted it into the template. I then used the magic wand tool to cut out the excess white around the picture of the lock. Also to follow the brand identity link between the two other stations i changed the colour of the third letter (C) to white.
The creation of the new Mixx logo.
I also decided to re-create the Mixx logo as I felt it was to plain to represent the station. I used www.dafont.com to chose a more suitable font I went with: Lemondrop. The first thing I did was create a background gradient I used pink and purple colours as i feel they best represented they style of the station.
I then used the stroke tool to have the letters contrast with the background. Were the back ground faded from pink to purple i used the stroke tool to put purple around the edge of the letters in the pink section and pink around the letters in the purple section.
to follow the theme of the Buzz logo i made the 3rd letter white and decided this would also look good with a contrasting boarder to the back ground so i used the stroke tool to make the edge of the X black.
The word Mixx makes me think of something being swirled together so i decided to use the brush tool to draw a swirl across the lettering, then to make the swirl look like it was weaving in and out of the lettering, i used the eraser tool to achieve this affect by rubbing out the lines over lettering at certain points. i then used an affect called outer glow to make the swirl stand out in a neon green kind of colour to symbolise the party style this station represents.

The creation of the new Buzz logo.
I decided the original Buzz logo I had created didnt caputre the style of the channel correctly so I re- edited it. I started off by using www.dafont.com to select a font I felt best caputred the style of the website and chose the font: Aberation. once I had selected my text I used the gradient to create a background, I chose a few colours and mixed them together to give a 'lively' effect. I then created seperate layers for each letter so i was able to move then around, I placed them in a diagonal line.
I changed the colour of the third letter (Z) and made it white to make the logo seem original and stand out I also thought the use of the white third letter could link the three logos together. I then decided to use the back drop to change the depth of the lettering to make them look slightly 3D and as if they are standing out.
I decided on including a music note as it is a logo for a music channel but compared to the style of writing the music note looked to neat, so I zoomed in and used a paint brush to draw around the edge giving it a rough hand drawn look like the lettering. Before completeing my logo I linked the layer of the original music note and the layer of the painted music note together so i was then able to duplicate the layer, so i had an identical music note which i then decresed the size of and placed it next to the original one, i then did this once more but this time making it even smaller, giving a nice decreasing effect.

Techniques in TV advertising.
Adverts use a selection of techniques to sell their products, these include:
- hidden or overt messages
- emotional response or association for example:
1) solution to a problem
2) fear
3) concern
4) compassion
4) self perception
5) social position
6) celebrity endorsement
Adverts also use persuasive techniques to sell the product, these different techniques are:
1) Hermeren- this distinguishes among the following kinds of power through which advertisements may have a persuasive influence.
2) Reward power- the product promises some kind of positive out come.
3) Coercive power- the product is presented upon pain of threat or punishment.
4) Referent power- the message associated with the product.
5) Expert power- the product is presented by an expert.
6) Star power- the product is associated with a celebrity figure.
An example of solutions to a problem is this Mr. Muscle advert, I feel this advert is targeted at house keepers with busy lifestyles showing a quick and easy cleaning solution, although its an expensive product so I believe this would be aimed at people within social grade B.
An example of emotional association of fear is this advert for testing your smoke alarms, I feel this advert will mainly target parents or home owners as it increases people awareness, I don't feel this advert can be graded.
An example of emotional association of concern is this Aptamil follow on milk advert, I believe this advert targets parents and people involved in the child care industry as parents have there child's best interest in mind, although the product is slightly expensive so I would feel it would be aimed at people graded A/B.
An example of self perception in adverts is this WKD advert, I think this advert would be mainly targeted at young adults with a care free lifestyle therefore would associate it with people graded C2 as the type of jobs they would have are not so demanding therefore allowing a fair amount of disposable time.
An example of self perception is shown in this Land Rover advert in which it links the car with a high social status, the advert includes hidden/ overt messages, I believe this advert is aimed at middle aged/ mature people with expensive and flashy tastes so I think this would be best suited for people in grade A.
An example of celebrity endorsement is shown here with Cheryl Cole in this L'oreal advert, using well known celebrities in adverts is a key element to publicizing the product, This product is mainly aimed at woman who like to keep up with there appearance although the product is slightly expensive i feel it would be aimed at people graded B/C.
Lars Hermeren distinguished between the different techniques used for persuasive influence these are:
- reward power, the product promises some positive benefit
- coercive power, the product presented upon pain threat or punishment
-referent power, the message associated with the product fits into the readers value system
-expert power, the product is presented by an expert
to this we can add Star power- the product associated with a celebrity figure.
- hidden or overt messages

2) fear
3) concern
4) compassion

The structures of television adverts.
This advert is for British Airways and falls into the category of realist narrative as it shows the suitcases from different countries racing through the flight process, linking to the 2012 olympics being hosted in Britain. The advert has some surreal elements in the way it give the luggage human like characteristics, and makes out the process to be like a race. The advert has a commentary over the top in a sport style linking with the olympics and appealing to sport fans. It gives the advert a similar feel to documentaries due to the commentary. The advert also has a humorous style in the way it give the luggage a human like personality, making it family friendly and linking to that iconographic style British Airways has always had. British Airways was the one of the first airways to fly internationally and has been the original classic airway to travel with therefore creating the whole iconographic style that follows when most people think of this company. The advert relates to events in the time period, like the olympics coming to Britain 2012. It is a fairly conventional advert as it contains elements such as a voice over and the logo used at the end. The advert uses a variety of shots in the way it captures the luggage on it travels.
This advert is for Colmans instant gravy and is a realist narrative advert of a woman making dinner then sitting down to eat it with her family, but there are special effects used during the advert as an animated bull jumps out the gravy and starts dancing. The bull links to the logo of bull the company uses. The advert is very conventional especially with the camera angles and continuity editing used, also they use a classic conventional song 'I like the way you move' but they change the lyrics to 'I like the way you moo' link with the animated bull, this is also of advertising because TV adverts often use popular songs, for example the Muller crunch yogurt advert changes the words from the song 'I ain't go no life' by Nina Simone which like 'I like the way you move' is a well known song. Colmans is an iconographic British sauce brand well known and commonly used. The advert can also be seen as quite humorous in the way the bull is dancing, also the dance moves the bull does are modern and relate to the hip hop culture of this generation.
This advert is for a new lynx body spray - 2012 end of the world, the form of the video is a realist narrative. It shows an man building an arc then once it is finished he sprays himself with the body spray and a mass of attractive women begin walking towards him, it is like the bible story of Noah and the Arc, which is a well known story. The style of the video is dramatic as it looks as if its the trailer to a film. The camera angles and shots are similar to that used in a film, also the sound used is very dramatic and there is also a voice over used at the end. There isn't any dialogue used by the characters in this advert.
This advert is for Emporio Armani Diamonds featuring Beyonce. The advert shows Beyonce dressed in a sparkly diamond like dress singing a well known song 'Diamonds are a girls best friend' by Marilyn Monroe. The use of a diamond dress and a song about diamonds likes to the product being sold. Also Beyonce is a high class celebrity like a iconographic female pop singer, therefore she is very suitable for an advert by a well established company. Marilyn Monroe is also a 1950's icon of a very glamours and beautiful star therefore links with the glamorous portrayal of the product.

Use of planning document.
Whilst filming we used our planning documents to direct George and ensure we were capturing everything we need. I have some footage/ sound of use doing so which i will shortly upload to my blog.
Exporting and effects
I have now finished editing my music video and am exporting it using quick time conversion, i will them be uploading it to youtube then taking the embed code and posting it on my blog. After receiving the feedback from Ahem records i have added a variety of effects into the video these include things such as: the earthquake effect, a negative colouring effect and colour changing effect. I feel these effects have really improved the video making it more enjoyable and engaging to watch.
Casting decisions
The cast for the video We Ain't Never done will include a selection of people from The Heart & Soul fan base, who are more then willing to volunteer to participate with the creation of the music video.
The cast for Illusion we decided to use George Haywood as Big Tempah.

Props costume and make-up for ' We Ain't Never Done'
Props- the props I will require for this music video will be: glasses, some bottle of alcohol, a few items of clothing, a hair brush, placards, a car, a trampoline, an acoustic guitar and a suit case. These will not be included within my budget as i already have these props and can produce them on request.
Make-up & costume- the only costume i will require is two t-shirts with the words 'SO' printed on them apart from this the rest of the cast will be wearing clothing similar to the style of clothing worn by The Heart & Soul.

Uploading
I have now uploaded my video after finishing all of my editing, which i feel went well i didn't encounter any major problems during this process and am happy with my final version of the video. I have included things such as fast cutting and a variety of effects to make my video look more professional and interesting for viewers to watch.
Rushes
We filmed in several locations these included my house so we could get shots of him on top of a roof as the artist singing these shot showed him being dominate as it was representing him on top of the world. We also filmed at George H's house to get shots of the story line- him packing moving on to better things. We also shots footage of George in his garage for cut away shots to show him practicing and wanting to move on and up in the world. We also filmed at Gatwick airport to get shots showing George leaving and moving up, showing that he has finally made it. We also filmed on some roads local to our school just to get shots of him lip syncing. No problems arose whilst we were filming in each different location so we were able to get our filming completed very easily. During filming George P and myself had to direct George H using the shooting schedule to ensure we had the correct shots we needed. We also used a fig rig when filming which George P was in charge of to ensure there weren't any shaky shots by mistake- although there is a few shaky shots one of which i have used within my final edit to make it look like a insight of what the artist is like of set messing around with his mates and the camera.
Illusion- rough cut
This is a rough cut off my music video which I struggled with slightly as I had to ensure all of my clips were lip synced perfectly, this took me a while but once I had done this I was able to chop away at bits that I didn't want and begin to create my video. I had some trouble with cutting out sections of footage I didn't want as once I deleted it, it would then shift the rest of my footage along which would push all of my footage out of lip sync. I over came this by locking sections of my footage that I had cut before taking a chunk out. I also had some trouble with parts of the footage in which George wasn't lip syncing, once I started adding our cut away clips I managed to solve the problem by adding in cut away clips were George wasn't lip syncing. At this stage of my work I haven't included many effects in my video as I'm trying to piece it all together once I have created my music video I will then add more effects on top.
Client feedback- Ahem records
This is my feedback form Ahem Records and I have broken it down into 'What Went Well' (WWW) and 'Even Better If' (EBI) :
WWW:
- nice variety of footage, suits the genre
- nice low angles of Big Tempah/ close ups when he looks directly into the camera
- editing is engaging
EBI:
- lip syncing is mostly good but some parts need to be fixed
- the editing could be quicker therefore fully suiting the rhythm of the track
- cut aways should be fully incorporated
- add more effects

Notes to accompany Attack Promo presentation.
Opening slide : Hello I’m Grace Wilson from Attack Promo and I’m here to show you the idea of the music video we will be creating for the new band Heart & soul
Slide two: The heart & soul are a newly formed punk band from London Camden described as a new generation for musicians with their lyrics challenging war and politicians. The band are heavily influenced by bands such as Public enemy, the clash and minor threat. The leader singer Oliver Brown describes the style of their music as a mixture of reggae, hip hop, folk and punk rock. The heart & soul consist of 5 members: the drummer Miles Williams, lead vocal/ lead guitar Oliver Brown, key board Caitlyn Jones, acoustic guitar Farrah Davis and bassist Oscar Thomson.
Slide three: The song we will be using to create a music video for is called We Ain’t Never Done, here is the song.
Slide four: we aim to represent the band in the way they have naturally chosen, as we feel the best way to represent your company is to show them as not to medal with style leaving the band to portray who they really are therefore gaining fans who genuinely like the band for who they really are.
slide five: my idea for the video is to follow a narrative storey line, detailing the relationship of a couple showing how it spirals from a blossoming relationship into heart break, this will be interlaced with scenes of other actors representing certain verses and the chorus using things such as placards, lyric s printed on t-shirts and mime.
Slide six: This is a list of the props I will require however this will not cost anything as I already have access to each of these props and can produce them with forewarning.
Slide seven: The locations I require to film in are: 36 & 34 Cotswold road, London bridge, south bank skate park and Brighton road, these are images of each of the locations I will require.
Slide eight: the cast I will require will be made up of 10 different actors from the fan base who are more than dedicated to help creating the video.
Slide nine: I need two t-shirts with the word ‘SO’ printed onto them, apart from this I will have each cast member dressed in clothing similar to what is worn by Heart & Soul.
Slide ten: This is a guide to the costs we will require to create the music video
Slide eleven: thank you for watching I hope you enjoyed the presentation and if you have any questions I am more than willing to answer them now
